A standalone battery energy storage facility of 200 MW / 400 MWh (C/2, two-hour) in Hunedoara County, western Romania, designed around lithium iron-phosphate storage units and bidirectional inverters, with an auxiliary demand of 4.2 MW.
The grid connection approval (ATR) was issued by the transmission system operator Transelectrica in June 2026 for 192 MW of export capacity and 208 MW of import capacity, on the basis of an approved solution study. The connection is made at 110 kV through a new dedicated bay in a 220/110 kV transmission substation located about one kilometre from the site, which keeps the connection route short and the connection tariff low — in the order of €7,700 per MW of approved capacity, with the upstream reinforcement share already included. The approved capacity becomes fully available in the final stage from 31 December 2028, in line with the operator's transmission development programme.
The asset is positioned for Romania's fast-growing flexibility market: manual and automatic frequency restoration reserves (mFRR, aFRR), day-ahead and intraday arbitrage, and the capacity market expected from 2027–2028. At transmission level, approved capacity of this size in a single connection point is difficult to replicate.
The site is held by the project company and is designated for a storage facility under Law 254/2022 and Law 166/2023, so no zonal urban plan is required; the urban-planning certificate was issued in July 2025. Remaining steps are the environmental approval, the building permit, the connection contract and the ANRE set-up licence, with ready-to-build targeted for Q4 2026. The project is offered as a share deal in a dedicated Romanian project company, with full documentation available in the data room under NDA.
